Deputy Director of the National Youth Council of Ireland James Doorley says many struggle to access training that could bring them off the breadline:

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says the government will push through on legislation to reform the judicial appointments system, despite concerns raised by judges.

He told the Dáil that the proposed changes were agreed under last year’s Programme for Government.

It includes a plan for a lay majority to sit on the new commission and for its chairman to be a lay person – which is the main concern among legal professionals.

Despite the controversy, Independent Minister Shane Ross claims the bill is not radical enough.
The opposition doesn’t end with the judges – Fianna Fáil is against the plans, labelling the bill is a “really bad piece of legislation”.

They have opposed the bill in the Dáil debates and claim they will continue to do so.

Ennis Fianna Fáil councillor Clare Colleran Molloy is also a barrister – she believes there needs to be equal representation between the legal and lay communities in appointing judges to key positions.
