Over €30 million has been paid out to over 5,500 Clare farmers this year under the Basic Payment Scheme.

The BPS is an EU initiative and is one of the key financial supports for irish farmers.

The government says an additional 1,500 farmers have received advanced payments compared to this time last year, despite reports this week on 7,000 farmers still waiting on their grants to be released.

Nationally, BPS payments to the tune of €747 million have been approved so far this year, which includes €30.3 million in Clare, which is an average of just less than €5,500 per farmer here.

Clare County Chair of the ICMSA, Martin McMahon says it’s crucial that the remaining payments are released soon.
