Clare TD Calls For Meat Processors Investigation

Clare’s Independent TD has called for the government to investigate whether meat processors are operating as a cartel.

Deputy Michael Harty’s comments, during a Dáil debate on the ongoing beef crisis, came as Kepak announced last night that it is suspending a planned €6.5 million investment in its facility at Drumquin near Ennis.

Processing there has been suspended since early August, and Kepak has accused protesters of “creating chaos in the Irish beef industry with little regard for its long-term future.”

But as the meat industry points the finger at picketing farmers, Deputy Michael Harty last night stood by their cause, telling the Dáil that processors should be investigated to ensure they’re not engaged in anti-competitive practices.
