The manager of Clare Marts says a proactive approach to reducing the number of accidents in the sector will be key to driving down their soaring insurance costs.

It comes as a coalition of 30 mart managers have come together to highlight their fears for the mart network ahead of the election.

According to the coalition, some marts have seen increases in their insurance premiums of up to 255% between 2015 and 2018, forcing the closure of Mountrath, Carrick-on-Suir and Castleblaney marts in the past 18 months alone.
