These figures show that levels of homelessness are continuing to grow in Clare and across this country.

Two years ago, in July of 2016, there were 23 homeless adults in Clare.

Last year, that climbed to 42 and now it stands at 72, although this is a monthly reduction of five.

Child homelessness is not broken down on a county-by-county basis in these statistics, but statistics for the Mid-West show there are 176 homeless children in Clare and Tipperary.

That has more than doubled since last July, and is up slightly in the past month.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has conceded that any rise in homelessness is unacceptable, but these figures will likely pile more pressure on him, with Sinn Féin poised to consider a motion of no confidence in the Minister next week.

Housing groups have hit out at the Minister today, with the Simon Communities and Focus Ireland saying the government is failed to deal with the problem, while Merchant’s Quay Ireland has labelled it a national disgrace.

Anthony Flynn, the CEO of Inner City Helping Homeless says the Government needs a new plan.
