The level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital is more than twice that of any other facility.

The latest INMO figures show there were 46 people waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick this morning, 36 of those in the emergency department.

The overall figure is 24 more than the next busiest facility and comes on a day when 160 people were waiting to be admitted at hospitals across the country.

Earlier, seperate figures showed 36 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among patients in the UL Hospitals Group, the highest of any hospital in the country, along with eight more suspected cases.

Six of the patients are being treated in intensive care.
