40% Of Students In Science Stay-Away

A North Clare teacher is calling for science subjects to be given more prominence in the second level curriculum.

It comes as a survey reveals 40% of students opted not to take science based subjects at Leaving Cert level or to choose them as part of their third level courses.

The research was conducted to mark the launch of the 2018 BT Young Scientists and Technology Exhibition, and also found a third of students said they no have no interest in pursuing a career in the field.

Teacher at Mary Immaculate College Lisdoonvarna John Simms says there’s a huge competition ongoing between various disciplines to attract third level students.
