Storm Diana is tracking across the country at a slower pace than originally expected and is now expected to peak here in Clare at around 3 o’clock this afternoon.

An orange wind warning remains in place for the county until then, while a low level yellow alert is in place until 6 o’clock this evening.

Clare has so far escaped the worst of the weather, though gusts of up to 81 kilometres per hour have been recorded at Shannon Airport this morning.

Clare County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team met in Áras Contae an Chláir this morning, reporting only one minor weather related incident so far.

A telephone wire down in Kilkee was subsequently made safe by Clare’s County Fire Service.

But around 150 homes and businesses are without power this afternoon due to the strong winds.

The EBS’s Clare Area Manager, Sinead O’Donnell outlines the areas affected.

Nationally, 40,000 are without power this lunchtime, with Kilkenny and Celbridge amongst the worst affected areas.

Flights at Shannon Airport are operating as normal, but with fourteen flights cancelled at Cork Airport, passengers are advised to check with their airline before they travel.

With heavy rain and strong winds forecast for much of the day, motorists are being asked to continue to drive with care if you’re heading out and about on the roads.

Spot flooding has been reported in some areas and Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Ireland, Conor Faughnan, says everyone should slow down.
