A total of 131 litter fines were issued in the Banner County last year, the same number as the year previous.

Of that number, just 65 paid the €150 penalty, which is the maximum fine under the Litter Pollution Act 1997.

This means that last year, €9,750 was taken in by Clare County Council from these fines.

The number of complaints about littering and dumping received in Clare last year, meanwhile, jumped by around 150 to 1,390 in the space of a year.

Where no payment or an appeal is received, legal proceedings are initiated, while anywhere that rubbish is found it’s examined for evidence to attempt to identify the perpetrator.
