Major Operation To Locate Missing Rescue 116 Crew Members

A major operation is continuing today to locate three missing crew members from Rescue 116.

One person has so far been recovered after the coastguard helicopter went down off the Mayo coast in the early hours of yesterday morning, Dara Fitzgerald passed away yesterday, in the second tragedy to hit the Coast Guard following the death of Caitríona Lucas’ death last year.

The LE Eithne has been searching through the night for the remaining three missing crew members from Rescue 116, while a survey vessel arrived on the scene early this morning to carry out a sonar search.

Navy and Garda divers, Ballyglass and Achill lifeboats, the LE Roisin, a fixed wing aircraft and two helicopters will also be involved at various points today.

A major operation will continue today to locate three missing crew members from Rescue 116.

Gerard O’Flynn of the Irish Coastguard says the team is concentrating on a relatively small search area.

Yesterday, Captain Dara Fitzgerld lost her life after being rescued from the sea, in the second tragedy to hit the Irish Coastguard in half a year.

Last Sunday marked the six month anniversary of the death of Doolin Coastguard Volunteer Caitríona Lucas, who lost her life during a rescue mission in Kilkee.
