100 Years On From The East Clare By-Election

Today marks the centenary of the election of renowned Irish republican Eamon de Valera as an East Clare Member of Parliament.

He was voted in as a Sinn Féin candidate on July 10th, 1917 and would represent Clare in both the UK and Irish governments until 1959.

De Valera left Sinn Féin in 1926 and went on to become the founder of the Fianna Fáil party, serving as both Taoiseach and President of Ireland.
