A status yellow snow and ice alert will also kick in at 11pm and Met Eireann says this could lead to treacherous conditions.

Clare County Council has up to 40 days worth of salt to treat roads should the cold snap persist.

All national roads, most of the regional roads and some of the local roads in the county were salted last evening, and while frost may persist in some sheltered areas, no major problems have been reported today.

Senior Engineer with the local authority, John Leahy, says they have adequate supply for an extended cold spell if required.

Information on salting routes can be found here.
