As we face a potential referendum on the issue of abortion, questions are now being raised over where our political representatives stand on the issue.

And while two of Clare’s Oireachtas representatives agree that there is a need to repeal the 8th Amendment, Independent TD Dr Michael Harty and Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway have expressed differing views.

Dr Harty says we now face a dilemma between moral and medical aspects of the issue.

And he believes there should be restrictions.

Between 1980 and 2016, 170,000 Irish women travelled to the UK for an abortion, while it’s estimated that 1800 women ordered pills online, with the intention of terminating their pregnancy without medical supervision.

That means that the equivalent of 15 women per day are having abortions.

Senator Martin Conway says that has to stop, but he says it’s a decision that should be made by the people themselves.

The issue will continue to be debated over the coming days ahead of an expected referendum on the issue at the end of May or early in June.
