Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports:

British Prime Minister Theresa May has begun a tour of Europe to try and convince leaders to give some ground on the Irish border backstop.

It’s after she delayed a crucial House of Commons vote over the risk of a heavy defeat by MPs.

Mrs May is due to meet the European Commission President this evening, but Jean Claude Juncker says there is “no room whatsoever” for any renegotiation of what he calls the “best and only possible” Brexit deal.

That will be voted on by January 21st at the latest, and Environment secretary Michael Gove says the government’s determined to get an agreement.

Here, the Irish Government is now stepping up preparations for a no-deal Brexit.

Tánaiste, Simon Coveney brought a significant position paper to cabinet this morning, and preparations for a hard border are now being put into action.

Clare’s Senator Martin Conway insists that’s a worse-case scenario and there remains hope a deal can be made – but he’s warning that things will likely get worse before there’s any positive news.
