Clare County Council last month granted conditional planning permission for the controversial works, but this now confirms that the planning battle will continue.

Clare County Council gave conditional planning permission to Trump Doonbeg in December, for works which will entail the construction of two coastal protection structures at Doughmore Beach, which is adjacent to the resort’s golf course.

However, the decision was criticised by a number of environmental groups, some of whom signalled their intention to appeal.

That has now occured, with An Bord Pleanala receiving an objection from Peter Sweetman and Associates Environment and Planning Consultants.

The grounds for this objection are not yet clear, but in a previous submission to Clare County Council, Mr. Sweetman claimed that granting planning permission for the development would contravene a ruling by the EU’s Court of Justice.

A decision on the appeal will be made later this year, possibly in May, and further objections are expected.
