Jaguar Land Rover is opening a software engineering centre in the Shannon Free Zone, from where it will develop the technology behind driver-less cars.

The investment will result in the creation of 150 jobs and it’s hoped it will lead to further expansion in the future.

Junior Minister at the Department of Jobs and Clare TD Pat Breen says this type of industry is the future.

The IDA-backed investment will also see the company partner with online education provider Udacity, which will provide courses from this base in artificial intelligence, robotics and data analytics.

The announcement has been welcomed by Shannon Chamber, who say it provides an opportunity for future employment for graduates of third level institutions in the region.

CEO Helen Downes hopes the activity will attract similar companies to Shannon.
