The Health Watchdog has found that a small number of staff at an Ennis nursing home didn’t have adequate training for dementia patients.

An inspection of Cahercalla Community Hospital has found five instances of minor non-compliance.

During an announced inspection of Cahercalla Community Hospice on January 17th last, inspectors noted that since 2013, a major refurbishment had been completed there to a high standard.

This had addressed the issue of multi-occupancy bedrooms and all residents are now accommodated in either single or twin bedrooms.

The inspector noted that overall, the care facility was substantially compliant.

However, five instances of moderate non-compliance were identified.

In one of these cases, concern was raised that a small number of staff did not have up-to-date training in responsive behaviour.

Responsive behaviour refers to how people with dementia or other conditions may communicate or express their physical discomfort, or discomfort with their social or physical environment.

Management committed to updating the staff training in this regard.

Other issues that emerged in the inpsection included risk management and updated care plans for older residents which have since been addressed.
