Clare footballers will need to beat Meath in the final round of the football league to maintain their position in Division 2 next season.
The Banner lost by narrowest of margins in Newbridge against a strong Kildare on a scoreline of 0-18 to 1-14, who secured promotion with their victory.
A Shane Brennan goal just after the break brought Clare right into the game but Kildare refused to give in with both sides trading points in the final minutes.
