Drop In Number Of Penalty Points Doled Out In Clare

The number of Clare drivers getting penalty points is falling – while speeding remains the most common driving offence.

The CSO has released its Transport Omnibus report which also shows there are over 72,000 motorists in this county driving on a full licence.

In 2016, Gardaí detected over 21,600 penalty point offences on Clare roads, marking a 2.6 percent drop on the previous year’s figure of just under 22,200.

Speeding offences account for the vast majority of them, while holding a mobile phone while driving was also identified as a concern.

53 drivers were also caught driving without insurance last year.

Nationally, the 31 to 40 age group accounts for the bulk of penalty point detection’s at almost a quarter, with under 21s accounting for the least amount of these notices at just over 2 percent.

Meanwhile, there are currently over 72,000 full driving licence holders on Clare’s roads – and around 5,800 learner permits.

There are just over 40,700 male drivers in the county, with 37,700 women.

Those aged between 40 and 49 make up the biggest group of Banner motorists, while there are over 1,700 full licence holders aged 80 of over and 11 learner permits in that bracket.
