Over 11,100 people living in Clare were not born in this country.

However, the number of non-Irish nationals living here has declined over the past five years.

9.5% of people in Clare weren’t born in Ireland, but their number has fallen by over 1,000 since the last Census in 2011.

Somewhat unusually, the biggest group of non-Irish residents are British – in most areas, that honour is held by people from Poland, who are the second biggest here.

It appears that Britons are attracted to some of the county’s smaller towns and rural areas – there being more Polish natives than UK-nationals in Ennis, Shannon, Kirush, Sixmilebridge and Newmarket-on-Fergus.

The Census also found that Clare is continuing to attract people from foreign climes.

Nearly 1,500 people moved here from outside of Ireland in the year to April 2016 – 65% of these were born outside of Ireland.

On a town-by-town basis, Shannon has the highest percentage of residents who were born outside of Ireland in Clare, while over a quarter of the population of Gort is non-Irish, with Brazilians continuing as the largest non-Irish group.
