Dooley Backs Water Charge Recommendations Amid FF/FG Row

Clare’s Fianna Fail TD insists that the best independent legal advice available shows that recommendations on water charges are adequate to deal with the country’s needs.

The Oireachtas committee is due to sign off tomorrow on its recommendations to abolish charges and allow refunds for customers, but Fine Gael is insisting that the committee’s findings represent a breach of EU law.

Over the weekend, Fianna Fáil threatened to block the election of a new Fine Gael leader, if the government doesn’t bring in laws to scrap the charges.

Deputy Timmy Dooley has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that it was a reminder that the Government must respect the wishes of the Dáil as set out in its ‘confidence and supply’ agreement.

However, Clare’s Fine Gael Senator has dismissed the suggestion that his party is rowing back on it’s agreement with Fianna Fáil.

Martin Conway says he’s hopeful that an agreement can be reached this week.
