Food retail chain Iceland is investing 12 million euro in nine stores across Ireland as part of it’s plan to open a store in every major town and city in the country.

Two stores in Galway and Tallaght opened yesterday, while the remaining seven will open in the coming months.

One of those, which is expected to be located in the Skycourt Shopping Centre in Shannon, will open in November, with the creation of 35 jobs.

The news comes on the back of the announcement that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in this county has fallen dramatically in the past month.

CSO figures show there was a drop of nearly 400 people on the live register here in March.

But while welcoming the positive news for the town of Shannon, local Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn has expressed concern over the impact the new retail store could have on existing businesses.
