Busy Day Of GAA Championship Action

It’s the first full Sunday of action in the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship with 11 teams getting their campaigns underway.

There’s just the one game in hurling as Tipperary and Cork face off in the Munster Championship at Semple Stadium.

The two sides are no strangers in the summer, but Cork haven’t beaten their rivals in the Championship in seven years.

Five of their players today make their first starts in the Munster Championship, while Tipp can call on 13 of the players that started last year’s All-Ireland final.

The Premier County suffered a big defeat to Galway in the league final last month, and former Tipp hurling captain Eoin Kelly says Cork could use that to their advantage.

Throw-in in Thurles is at 4pm.

There are five games in the Football Championship, with the first of those starting at 2pm.

Mayo’s quest for that ellusive Sam Maguire Cup begins for another year as Sligo pay a visit to McHale Park.

Sligo qualified for the game after seeing off New York in the preliminary round two weeks ago.

 

Then at 3pm attention turns to Leinster where there are three first round ties to be decided.

Louth take on Wicklow, Laois face Longford and Carlow meet Wexford.

The minor game between Carlow and Wexford precedes that one at 1pm.

Then at 4pm the Antrim footballers will be hoping to put a controversial week behind them as they take on Donegal in the Ulster quarter-finals.

The Saffrons have been able to name Matt Fitzpatrick after he had his 48 week ban overturned midweek.
