Body Of Woman Recovered From Sea At Cliffs Of Moher

The body of a woman was recovered from the sea in Co Clare this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 11.30am when a body was reported to have been seen in the sea close to Hags Head at the southern end of the Cliffs of Moher.

Gardaí were alerted while the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was requested to launch their boat and make the recovery. Other team members proceeded to the area by road.

On arrival at the scene, Coast Guard volunteers quickly located a body a few hundred metres off-shore. The remains were recovered from the water the taken to Doolin Coast Guard station.

After being formally pronounced dead, the body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The circumstances of the tragedy are being investigated by Gardaí however the death is believed to be a personal tragedy.
