Bio-Pharmacy Investment A Vote Of Confidence In Shannon And Midwest – IDA

A multi-million euro investment by a global bio-pharmacy company in Shannon has been described as a vote of confidence in the region.

MeiraGTx is investing in a new facility in the Shannon Free Zone, which is being delivered by Shannon Commercial Properties, and will result in the creation of 100 new jobs.

MeiraGTx is a clinical-stage gene therapy company, which develops potentially curative treatments for patients living with serious diseases.

The bio pharmacy company has operations globally including in New York and London and it’s now hoping to bolster its services by investing in a facility in the Shannon Free Zone.

Construction is underway on a ‘plasmid production facility’, which is expected to be operational by the end of the year, while a second ‘viral vector manufacturing facility’ is due to be operational by the end of 2021.

The project, which will lead to the creation of 100 jobs, is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Regional Manager for the Midwest, Will Corcoran says it’s a vote of confidence in Shannon and the region.

The new facility comes as part of a major development programme by Shannon Commercial Properties.

By end of 2020 almost 1 million square foot of new or refurbished office, aviation and industrial commercial property facilities will have been delivered in the Shannon Free Zone, since it’s parent group Shannon Group was formed in 2014.

In a statement, Shannon Group Chair, Rose Hynes says this announcement validates their decision to commence the programme and follows significant investments by Jaguar Land Rover, Edwards Lifesciences, Engine Lease Finance and GE Sensing.

Shannon Chamber is based in the Shannon Free Zone and it’s Chief Executive Helen Downes has applauded the investment, in the midst of what she’s described a very difficult economic environment.

Shannon Aiport was one of the main deciding factors in the decision by MeiraGTx to open the two new biopharma facilities in the region.

Clarecastle Fine Gael TD Joe Carey, who is the Chair of a Shannon Airport Oireachtas Committee says the continued availability of international connectivity through the midwest facility will prove crucial for the region into the future.
