McDowell defends US Open title

 

The US Open will get underway today at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland.

Shane Lowry will be one of the first out on the course on Day 1 when he tees off at midday Irish time,

as will Padraig Harrington who starts on the back nine at a quarter to one.

Defending champion Graeme McDowell will also be out early at five to one.

And Rory McIlory will be last out, not teeing off until after half six this evening.

Hannon Hoping For Knockout Debut

A Clareman is putting the finishing touches to his preparations for his professional boxing debut this weekend.

Martin Hannon of Shannon will take on Donegal's Mickey Doherty in a light middleweight contest in Galway this Saturday.

Saturday's event at Leisureland is only the second pro boxing event to be held in Galway, and Martin's told Clare FM that he's hoping it will mark the beginning of big things for him, with an Irish Title his ultimate goal.

Harrigton tied for 22nd after Saint Judes Classic

 

 

Padraig Harrington hit a final round of 68 to finish tied for 22nd on 2 under at the St Jude Classic in Memphis.

The event was won by Harrison Frazer who beat Robert Karlsson in a play-off after both men finished 13 under.

Clare victors from Muster Track and Field Meet

 

There were several Clare winners in the  Munster Juvenile Track and Field championships at Lees Road

Alex O Neill  of St Cronan's set a New Munster Record in taking a silver medal in the girls U/12's High Jump while there was gold for Tara Kelly of  St Mary's also in the High Jump

Grace Moloney Tulla took gold in the Ballthrow.

Jamie Roche Ennis Track and Eoin Looney Kilmurray Ibrickane/North Clare secured Gold and Silver in the Boys U/13's 600metres

Clare success at Munster championship

In athletics news and

Alex O Neill of St Cronan'as set a new Munster record on Day one of the Munsrer championships held at Lees road today.

Her leap of 1.37 gave her silver ansd she also claimed silver in the 600 metres.

Elaine Shannon took bronze in the girls u13 600 metres while Kilmihil claimed bronze in the 4x100 metres relay
 

Woods to miss US Open

 

 

Tiger Woods has confirmed that he will miss this year's US Open at Congressional.

The former World Number One is still struggling to overcome recurring knee and Achilles injuries, which he aggravated during the third round of this year's US Masters.
 

Four Irish Fail to make Open cut

 

Paul Mc Ginely, Shane Lowry, Michael Hoey and Gareth Maybin have all failed to reach the Open Championship.

The 4 did not make it through qualifying yesterday at Sunningdale.

Gareth Maybin did not complete the course due to injury.
 

Motorcyclist killed at Isle of Man Races

 

 

Irish motorcyclist Derek Brien has been killed in an accident at the Isle of Man TT races.

The 34 year old from Bellewstown, Co. Meath, crashed on the first lap of today's opening Super sport event, with the race being red-flagged afterwards.

A former Manx Grand Prix winner and a regular competitor on the Isle of Man, Brien is the third rider to die at this year's TT.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

 

Fallon out of Derby after appeal by owner of Native Khan

Kieren Fallon has been prevented from riding in today's Derby following a
decision in the Court of Appeal.

The legal action was instigated by the owner of Native Khan who claimed Fallon
had broken a promise to ride their horse.
