The Today Show – Thursday May 17th

Clare FM’s Gavin Grace discussed the rising cost of living with Peter Young of Irish Country Living. Peter has conducted research involving five rural families that shows how in some cases rural living is more expensive than city living. With double the transport expenditure, increased charges on insurance and higher heating costs, life in rural areas is significantly more expensive than living in one of Ireland’s city. Peter Young revealed a difference of €8,500 a year from his study.  Martin McMahon from O’Callaghan’s Mills, a Farmer, also joined the show to discuss the cost comparison.  Martin spoke about how local services are being cut from communities which has led to people having to commute to urban areas for post office services and shops among others.  They discussed transport and car costs, mortgages, insurance costs, water charges and septic tanks and farming costs.

Also on The Today Show Gavin Grace spoke with founding member of The Horslips, Barry Devlin
about a new film he’s written. “A Kiss for Jed” comes to the Empire in Ennis this Friday night – May 18th. The film is a romantic comedy starring well-known Irish actor from Ennis, Mark O’Halloran, rising star Jayne Wisener and Lee Arenberg (from the Pirates of the Caribbean films). It is directed by Maurice Linnane, well known for working with U2 on various videos and for his work in Irish television. Barry, apart from his career as a musician, has been involved in making music videos for U2 and has been screenwriting since the early eighties for both TV and film.

Through the Ages returned to The Today Show, and today’s installment featured the students of Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire, Newmarket on Fergus. The feature includes today’s pupils from across Clare bringing to life memoirs and folklore collected by students 75 years ago as part of an oral history project. The essays that resulted from this project form a unique record of the customs, beliefs, stories and songs of that time. They include tales, traditions, old cures, riddles and jokes – and are reanimated by today’s pupils from across Co. Clare.
