The Today Show – Monday February 6th

On today’s edition of The Today Show, Kay in Shannon called the show to voice her opinion on the high cost associated with the Holy Communion. It follows much discussion on Clare FM regarding the government’s decision to cut special grants to families on benefits to cover the cost of First Communion and Confirmation expenses. Until recently 14,000 families were paid 242 Euros each to cover the cost, which could include a white dress, veil, shoes and bag. On Thursday the Department of Social Protection said the payment would now be capped at 110 euros.

Chris Finn is the National Co-ordinator of the group Friends of Breastfeeding.  She spoke to Clare FD’s Gavin Grace about a protest taking place in Dublin today. A protest is being held outside Facebook offices against the company’s decision to ban photographs of women breastfeeding on its social networking site. Facebook has not only removed the images on profile pages in recent years – but it’s also suspended the accounts of those where such images were posted. As a result, angry mothers across the world are planning to hold demonstrations outside Facebook offices in different countries.

Paul “Calso” Callaghan, our resident Chef and Food Blogger discussed herbs on today’s cookery feature.  Paul explained how to grow your own herbs, many of which have hidden health benefits, when to use them and how.  For details and more tips from Paul see http://thesustainablelarder.blogspot.com/p/herbs-and-all-things-nice.html

Also on today’s show Gavin Grace spoke to comedian Neil Delamere about the ups and downs of being a touring comic. Following the sell out success of his last show, Neil returns with a new national show, “Restructuring”, in which he comes to terms with the changes in the country, the world and more importantly his own living arrangements! He comes to the Glor Theatre, Ennis on Saturday 18th February – see www.neildelamere.com for more details.
