The Today Show – Friday February 17th

Orla O’Connor, Head of Policy with the National Women’s Council of Ireland joined The Today Show as it’s 20 years ago today since the beginning of the X Case – when the High Court issued a permanent injunction against a 14 year old girl who was raped, from leaving Ireland to terminate her pregnancy.  Shortly after that, the Supreme Court ruled that when a pregnant woman’s life is in danger, including from suicide, she has the right to an abortion in Ireland. However, no legislation on this has ever been enacted – and today over 50 groups, TD’s, academics and NGOs have come together, and will launch their campaign for this law at a public meeting in Dublin on February 21st.

Clare FM’s Dermot Hogan was in Sixmilebridge ahead of the Chinese Vice President Mr. Xi Jinping’s visit Clare this weekend.  He will land at Shannon where he’ll be greeted by the Tanaiste – Eamon Gilmore. He’ll then carry out engagements at Shannon Development, Bunratty Castle, the Cliffs of Moher and a dairy farm in Sixmilebridge before flying to Dublin on Sunday.  He asked the residents of Sixmilebridge about how they felt about the visit.

Auctioneer Aidan Foley of The Auction Rooms in Doneraile and Sixmilebridge spoke to Gavin about a surprise windfall for a Clare family. A ticket for a GAA football game which ended in tragedy in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday in 1920 sold for over €5,000 at auction. A rare piece of history from the Irish War of Independence, the ticket remained in the pages of a book at a family home in Co. Clare before they brought it to a local auctioneer. On the morning of November 21, 1920, IRA gunmen murdered 14 British intelligence officers and other members of the Crown forces. Later that afternoon, British police and soldiers attended a match in Croke Park between Tipperary and Dublin, which was a fundraiser for republican prisoners, where they shot dead 14 people, including Tipperary footballer Michael Hogan. The auction attracted both Internet and phone bidders with a winning bid of €5,400
