The Afternoon Show – Monday October 21st 2013

On Monday’s edition of The Afternoon Show Máire Moynahan was joined by Aileen McGloin of Safefood to discuss the startling statistics, which show that one in four Irish children are overweight or obese. HSE, Safefood and Healthy Ireland are launching a new public health campaign today to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic in Ireland. They are hoping that by highlighting everyday habits associated with weight gain, the issue can be tackled by parents before there are long term health risks. For details on nutrition and exercise please visit www.safefood.eu and check out their facebook page.

Peter McDonnell from Peter McDonnell & Associates also spoke to the show ahead of a free information meeting for Irish patients affected by the De Puy Hip Recall of 2010. It takes place from 2pm Monday, 21st October in The Old Ground Hotel, Ennis.  All interested parties are welcome to attend. Mary Corbett from Forgotten Horses Ireland also discussed their need for volunteers and funds to help abandoned horses in the South Galway and West of Ireland region. Forgotten Horses Ireland was formed as a result of a large number of feral and abandoned horses dying on the commonage over the past few years. A census was conducted in May 2012 covering an area expanding 2400 acres, on the day there were 126 horses counted, many of these were mares in foal who have since foaled, bringing the number in excess of 150. Current legislation does not allow for the removal of these horses as they are on a commonage, unless they are found to be welfare cases. If you are interested in lending a helping hand and have your own transport, please contact us at [email protected] Forgotten Horses Ireland are holding a race night event on Oct 25th in the Pier Head in Kinvara.

John Dillane from Top Bike in Ennis joined the show ahead of an exhibition featuring Michael Collins’ bicycle, which comes to Clare this week. Top Bike, Ennis are holding it, as their family has personal ties to Michael Collins.  John Dillane’s grand-uncle, Thomas Healy from Kerry, was a RIC man and typical of Collins’ men was stationed in Ennis and a member of the East Clare Brigade.  He died in action in 1922 in Sixmilebridge before the treaty was signed and is mentioned in the book ‘Blood on the Banner’.  The family are looking into the history of Thomas Healy and welcome any information.

Brigid Barry is the Trust Coordinator at Burrenbeo Trust and spoke to Máire about  how for hundreds of years, Burren farmers have marked the end of summer by herding their cattle up onto winter pastures in the limestone uplands, in the tradition known as winterage and the Burren is one of the only places in the world where it still occurs. Winterage has been integral to shaping today’s familiar Burren landscape. Along with the local community, the Burrenbeo Trust is coordinating the 2013 Burren Winterage Weekend (October 25th -27th), which celebrates the Burren’s fascinating farming heritage and the broader significance of pastoral farming in the Burren and beyond. Please visit www.burrenwinterage.com for a full schedule of events.
