The show also covered the issues around the opening of the new and long-awaited Emergency Department at the region’s main hospital. Labour health spokesperson, Dep Alan Kelly secured an assurance that the ED will open on May 29, but expressed concern that the necessary €2.7 million required hasn’t yet been secured. Dep Kelly told Gavin he’s determined to ’embarrass’ the government into providing the funding. Gavin also spoke with the INMO’s Phil Ní Sheaghdha who criticised the uncertainty surrounding the funding situation.

The issues raised by members of the Garda Representative Association(GRA) at their annual conference were then discussed, as Gda Paul Crowley joined Gavin on the line from Galway.

There’s been a warning this week that people are becoming complacent about vaccinations and that this is costing lives. Gavin was joined on the line by June Shannon of the Irish Medical Times to discuss the importance of vaccination and some of the controversies around the issue.

Among the comments to the show was one from an Ennis woman concerned at the level of begging on the streets of the county town. The caller spoke to Morning Focus producer, Fiona McGarry, about her recent experiences.

Gavin’s next guest was Mairead Lavery, the lady behind a special fundraising initiative, The Maureen Lavery Pink Angel Ball. On Saturday next (April 29), there’s a special tea party and bake sale at the Maria Assumpta Hall in Ennis to raise funds.

Next up was Louise McGuane, Managing Director of Chapel Gate Whiskey in Cooraclare. She’s won a prestigious ‘Brand Battle’ in Florida and told Gavin it’s a huge opportunity for the company.

Eoin Brennan, a regular contributor to the Morning Focus Sports Panel, joined Gavin in studio to discuss his recent trip to Brazil with Go Gaelic, who promote Gaelic games overseas. Listen back below:

Josephine Donnellan, principal of Scoil Mhuire in Ennistymon, then joined Gavin on the line to outline activities at the school as they anchor the Cycle Against Suicide next Monday (May 1).
