To open the show, we spoke to Karen Brosnahan, Manager of Shannon Region and Sports Bureau to discuss the potential for the Shannon Region to benefit from business and sports tourism as a growth in business was reported last year.

The Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau have been outlining how the MidWest can make the most of opportunities over the coming years to ensure the growth of the region – from both national and international customers. Last year, the Bureau and Fáilte Ireland reported a record year with 11.6 million euro worth of business conducted, up from 7.5 million the year before.

Next on the show, we heard from the Director of the Passport Service, Fiona Penollar as she spoke to our very own Ben Sweeney about how the Passport service has expanded its online operations. Considering it’s the time of the year that you might be looking to book a trip away to shores sunnier, the Irish Passport Service are urging people to make sure that their document is in date – and even that they know where it is! They’ve also expanded their range of online services to include first-time applicants.

After today’s 10 am News Headlines, we were joined in studio by three students as they are demanding that attention be paid on Climate change in the election campaign. Rose Guy, Kate Harty and Eleanor Dagnall Wise have all been to the fore in the Fridays for Future campaign in Ennis, and want to ensure that climate change is taken seriously in this election.

Next on Morning Focus, we were joined in studio by Michael Leahy as he is an Irish Freedom Party General Election Candidate. A political party that wants Ireland to leave the European Union will have a candidate in Clare in the General Election. Michael Leahy, a former President of Ennis Chamber, is to run for the Irish Freedom Party. It also says that it seeks the protection of freedom of speech rights, and promotes what it calls the “repatriation of powers” from the EU. Mr. Leahy was of the Clare pro-life campaign during the 2018 referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

Next, Michael McCarthy, General Manager of Falls Hotel and Spa in Ennistymon joined us in studio as the iconic landmark on Clare’s Coast are to help power a local hotel. The Falls Hotel & Spa last week announced they have become the first and only hotel in the country to generate power from its own hydroelectricity plant. The plant took two years to complete and harnesses energy from the River Inagh that flows alongside the hotel. It’s been in place for a year now and the hotel estimates that their energy consumption has reduced by 550 tonnes of carbon – or three return trips, by car to the moon!
