Morning Focus – Thursday 20th of June

On Thursday’s Morning Focus we recapped on a topic that was in the news last week. We got huge reaction when Paul Moroney spoke with us about the changed speed limits on the N68 Ennis-Kilrush Road, and how he feels it’s only added to danger on the route.

But now another man who’s expressing concern is Kilrush-based solicitor Patrick Moylan. In a letter to Clare FM, he described the change in speed limits as “the greatest threat to West Clare since the foundation of the State.” Patrick Moylan of O’Kelly Moylan Solicitors in Kilrush and Ennis joined us in the studio to express his concerns.

An unpublished report prepared by the HSE’s National Doctors Training and Planning Unit has painted a damning picture, reporting that consultant recruitment in Ireland is ‘in crisis.’ First reported by the Sunday Business Post, the unpublished report presents the first admission from the health service that what is now happening on a widespread basis in Irish hospitals and the resultant gaps in service is creating clear patient safety risks.
It states that the number of applicants for consultant posts has fallen dramatically, outlines a significant brain drain of Irish doctors, and states that many posts were unsupported appropriately by clinical teams. The IMO says this de facto admission by the HSE warrants a response from the Health Minister.
Dr. Clive Kilgallen, Chair of the IMO Consultant Committee joined Gavin earlier today to discuss what needs to be done to change this.
