As tougher drink driving laws come our way, so too is a pilot scheme in 19 counties to provide evening transport for rural dwellers.

The scheme hasn’t rolled out in Clare yet, but with rural pubs struggling, Gerry Shortt of Shortt’s Bar in Feakle told Gavin it’s worth a try. Gerry outlined the plight of rural pubs and their patrons, and the need for some kind of intervention to preserve the social fabric of Irish life.

Then, the prospect of a cannabis farm being set up on Carrigaholt with the intention of producing the first-ever Irish cannabis oil was discussed. Entrepreneur Laura Foley has secured a licence to produce this legal product and is hopeful that local farmer will consider growing cannabis to supply an extraction facility she’s planning to build.

Then, Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of LIT joined Gavin to outline the college’s ambitious plans to 2022 and the aim of becoming a major regional technological university.

After that, Gavin was joined by Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) who welcomed plans for a major new sewerage project for Clarecastle, which will stop tonnes of raw sewerage going into the River Fergus.

Then, Gavin presented a special package featuring Cree-founded Clean Ireland Recycling who are rolling out their ‘Let’s Recycle’ initiative to schools throughout County Clare at present. Soon, they’ll be bringing it to Counties Limerick and Tipperary too. It sees the company teach young children about the importance of recycling, and how they can make a difference to the environment by their own actions.

Then, Gavin heard from author Jo Kerrigan who told him about her book ‘Follow the Old Road’. It features several transport routes in bygone days in the Banner County, including the West Clare Railway.

The talk then returned to supporting rural communities and their social fabric, with Niall Garvey from Inagh, CEO Muintir na Tíre.

Boosting your emotional resilience in challenging times was the next topic on the show, when Gavin was joined by Dr Harry Barry, GP and author.
Dr Harry Barry, a highly respected Irish author and GP, has written a new guide on boosting our ability to tackle this and other issues that can beset us in these challenging times. His latest book ‘Emotional Resilience’ is described as a tool in the struggles of life.

There’s excitement in Shannon ahead of a visit from the Mayor of Guingamp Mon Philipe Goff from Brittany. As part of a celebration between Guingmap and Brittany, he’ll meet representatives of Shannon Group and Shannon Airport on Friday morning to discuss business links.
Gavin was joined in studio by Pat Costello and John O’Brien of the Shannon and Guingamp Town Twinning Association. Mike McKee Chairperson of Shannon MD, Clare Co Co also joined in the discussion.
