The midweek edition of Morning Focus heard from the author of a major new biography of Éamon de Valera.

Broadcaster David McCullagh told the show why he’s fascinated about the former TD for East Clare, who is one of the most significant figures in 20th century Irish history. Listen back below:

The show opened with a discussion of a proposed major infrastructural development for Clare. Peter Morehan of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) joined Pat Flynn to outline a public consultation event on a proposed service station for the M18, at a site close to Newmarket-on-Fergus.

With the controversy of the Paradise Papers continuing, Pat discussed the fall-out with Ennis native Micheál Collins, who is Assistant Professor of Social Policy at UCD.

With ongoing discussion over whether or not town councils might be restored, Pat heard from the Irish Examiner’s Political Editor, Daniel McConnell. He’s spoken with a senior Cabinet source who says the government’s been advised not to restore these authorities.

With the new Public Health (Alcohol) Bill due for discussion this week in the Seanad, Pat heard from Dr Helen McAvoy about the number of lives that could be saved if it’s enacted. Dr McAvoy is Director of Policy at the Institute of Public Health of Ireland (IPH).

To gauge the attitude of people in this county, Clare FM’s Emerald Kenny went out and about to ask people if we need tighter regulation of drink.

With the Doonbeg One-Act Drama Festival getting underway this weekend, Pat was joined in studio by Chairperson of the West Clare Drama Festival, Rita McInerney.

Afterwards, Pat heard about two new books published by the Clare Roots Society – Women of Clare by Lucille Ellis and Drumcliff, Section B by Flan Hehir.

Then, the talk turned to caving and the Burren’s Dark Underbelly which is the subject of a Winter Tea Talk in Tubber tonight (Weds Nov 8). Pat heard from Tim O’Connell, one of the speakers, who is a highly experienced caver.

Afterwards, Pat had a chat with Shane Booth from a band called Cua who are coming to the Kilkishen Cultural Centre on November 17.
