The National Ploughing Championships are getting underway in Laois today –  There will be Clare competitors in the Junior, Under 28, Under 21, Vintage and Horse Ploughing Categories as Pat Quinn, PRO of the Clare Ploughing Association, explained when he spoke with John Cooke on Tuesday’s Morning Focus

Today’s Afternoon Show with Maire Moynahan and Your Tunes with Stephen McDermott are coming live from Co Laois and day one of this year’s Ploughing Championships
Maire Moynahan joined John live from the 200 acres site in Stradbally to have a chat about the atmosphere there and what’s coming up in her show later today. 

University of Limerick Ennis Town Community Safety Research is about to get underway
It will be done by surveys online, face to face ones, focus groups and workshops
This is part of the Ennis Purple Flag Week – the focus of which, it was decided by the Working Group- is Safety and Awareness

John was joined in studio by Ennis Town Councillor Johnny Flynn and businessman Brian O’Neill of The Rowan Tree Hostel and Promote Ennis, and Dr. Chris McInerney, Lecturer of Department of Politics & Public Administration at the University of Limerick, was on the line to discuss how they will conduct the research.

Moy man Seamus Ryan was elected Vice Chairman of the Irish Labour Party on Saturday
The Ennis Labour Chairman Seamus Ryan was elected decisively over Dublin County Councillor Ciaran Byrne with 58% of the vote
He will now have responsibility for chairing the National Executive and the Parties Central Council and joint responsibility for chairing the Labour Party Conference in Killarney at the end of November
Seamus spoke with John and expressed his delight with the accolade and that he will be the Labour party candidate for the Ennis Municipal District Council next Spring. 

A referendum to change the Constitution to allow for the establishment of a new court of appeal will be held on October 4th along with the referendum to abolish the Seanad
On our Morning Focus legal advice slot this morning John was joined by Paul Tuohy of Michael Houlihan and Partners, Ennis and volunteer solicitor at the Free Legal Advice Clinics to explain what people are being asked to vote for.
 
Pathologist Dr Stephen Stewart is Director of the Liver Disease Centre at the Mater Hospital, Dublin
He spoke with John and said an increasing amount of people in their 30s and 40s are presenting with liver disease – most of them women- and the problem is getting worse
He went on to discuss the damaging effects of alcohol consumption and his opposition to ‘Arthur’s Day’ as a cynical method of the promotion of alcohol.

Clare VEC Adult Education Service are offering introductory music lessons and workshops in Ennis, all welcome and lessons are free of charge
The project information evening will take place this Wednesday at 7pm in the Adult and Community Education Centre, Clonroad Business Park, Ennis (the project is based there)
Laura Ugur – Community Music Project Worker with the Adult and Community Education Centre- joined John in studio to explain and invite people to get involved.

Clare ISPCA Warden Frankie Coote joined John in studio for his regular slot where he has advice on the proper care of animals
