Hear Jim Warny’s First In-Depth Interview on Morning Focus

Today’s Morning Focus was a memorable one indeed, as the majority of the first hour was filled by the first extensive interview with Jim Warny, the Ennis resident and Belgian national who was part of the Thai cave rescue team.

Warny returned to Clare last week to a hero’s welcome but still the man remains humble. He chatted with Gavin about the whole experience from the rescue to the aftermath to returning home again.

Before all that though, there was discussion of the treatment of Clare supporters during the weekend’s Clare v Wexford match. As supporters ran onto the pitch to congratulate the team on their win many of them were escorted back off the pitch by stewards and security. Many felt this was unneeded and the word ‘manhandling’ has been used.

The second hour opened with a street view of Fleadh na Mumhan. Who’s in town for the Fleadh and what’s the atmosphere like? We went out with the microphone to find out.

Then an unconventional but perhaps effective way to raise money for charity. A West Clare lip sync event in aid of Pieta House and the Elevate Foundation is looking for volunteers. Both Pieta House and Elevate Foundation deal with the issue of suicide. There is an information night on this event tomorrow night (Wednesday July 18th) in the Armada Hotel.

Then acclaimed fiddle player Tola Custy makes a return to Glór for a new show: Edges of Light. The show is a collaboration between Tola, dancer Colin Dunne, harper Maeve Gilchrist and uilleann piper David Power. It is inspired by the natural sounds and sights of sunrise, in particular the fact that the sun rises in Dublin 25 minutes  after it does at Greenwich. (8:25 Dublin Mean Time = 8:00 Greenwich Mean Time) The show plays at Glór on Saturday, July 28th at 8pm.

Finally, the show ended with show regular, Clare County Dog Warden Frankie Coote with our animal welfare update.
