Today on Morning Focus, Dr Siobhán O’ Connor, Interim Service Manager of Clare Haven, joined us in studio as domestic violence victims are to be remembered in Ennis this evening.

A candlelight walk to commemorate the women who have been killed in County Clare by their partners or exes is to take place this evening. The event organised by the charity Clare Haven will be a sombre reflective walk from the Garda Station to the Court House in Ennis, starting at 6.30pm. It’s part of the annual 16 Days of Violence initiative. It comes days after Garda Commissioner Drew Harris stated that figures surrounding domestic violence are “truly shocking”, that they “deserve more coverage” and called domestic violence “one of the least prosecuted crimes, and one of the greatest threats to family life.”

Clare Haven have a confidential 24-hour support line which is 065 682 2435.

Next, Rail Campaigner, Michael O’ Doherty of Crusheen, joined us in studio as hopes that Irish Rail will develop a new rail stop in Crusheen have been dealt a further setback. Local campaigners have been fighting for over a decade for a stop at Crusheen to be included on the Ennis-Athenry line, and say it could be added to the existing line for a relatively low cost. But, responding to a parliamentary question, Irish Rail CEO Jim Meade, who hails from Sixmilebridge, has told Clare Independent TD Michael Harty that the money simply isn’t there, even though the case is being kept under review.

Next on Morning Focus, Danny McCarthy from Seafield joined us on the line as he helped a Sea Lion make his way back to the sea as he found him washed up on the sand, while on a walk with his dog over the weekend.

After that Tommy Corbett of Carey Corbett Financial Solutions joined us in studio for this week’s Financial Advice slot. Tommy discussed Christmas insurance considerations and some other financial aspects which are relevant to this time of year.
