Morning Focus – Thursday 19/07/18

Britain’s deadline to leave the EU is looming closer and closer and as a result Brexit is in people’s thoughts more than ever. We here at Morning Focus are no different.

With the UK’s position uncertain, our government here in Ireland are bracing for a ‘no-deal’ scenario. The cabinet met in Kerry yesterday (July 18th) to make contingency plans for a number of Brexit scenarios. We talked to Minister Pat Breen about the situation.

Then the recent hot spell has seen a number of water shortages and a number of water conservation efforts across the country as a result. In light of this some have been calling for the Shannon Water Extraction plan to be pushed ahead. The plan involves the construction of a 170km pipeline from the Parteen Basin to a reservoir in Dublin. Local farmers are resisting the plan as the pipeline will intersect a lot of farmland and the ‘real solution lies in fixing the leaks in the existing system.’ Seamus Sherlock, ICSA Rural Development Chair represented the organisation against the plan on the show this morning.

Rounding out the show’s first hour Jenny Walsh from the Simon Community talked about the charity’s plans to help struggling parents with back to school costs. They are currently packing 4,500 stationary packs and are looking for any volunteers available.

The second hour was time for our Parenting Advice segment with Dr. Toby Sachsenmaier. This week’s focus was teaching kids about sex and relationships.

Finally, we heard from Colonel Colm Doyle, an accomplished military man who has written a memoir. The book, ‘Witness To War Crime: The memoirs of an Irish Peacekeeper in Bosnia’, details Colm’s experiences as an international peacekeeper and later, representative of British Politician Lord Carrington, in Bosnia in the time of the Balkan conflict. Colm also led a FCA battalion in Clare for a time. The book is published by Merrion Press.
