Today’s show opened with Dr. Michael Harty TD. He discussed the implementation of the Sláintecare report.
More specifically Harty expressed concerns that several key deadlines are being missed by Taoiseach Varadkar and the current administration. Harty has attempted to meet with Varadkar on two occasions but has found no success.
Speaking of the Taoiseach, he’ll be busy this week visiting a number of European capitals in an attempt to establish bilateral trade and cultural relations. The move comes in the wake of UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s rejection of the idea Northern Ireland could remain in the EU customs union post Brexit. Varadkar is warning that time is tight to come up with a withdrawal agreement for Britain to leave the EU, as the spectre of a no-deal Brexit looms. We spoke to Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway of Ennistymon about the whole situation.
Finally in the first hour we heard about the Clare Schoolboys/Girls Soccer League’s tribute to Jim Warny, the Clare diver who aided in the rescue of the Thai boys football team from the caves. Calls have been made county and nationwide for Jim to be honoured in some way but the SFAI (Schoolboys Football Association of Ireland) is the first to do so. Tommy Molloy chatted to Gavin about the presentation.
The second hour opened with Garda Focus with Tríona O’Rourke, Clare Crime Prevention Officer.
Then, we heard about a collaboration between Clare Sports Partnership and the University of Limerick. Move For Life aims to increase physical activity levels for inactive people who are over 45 years of age. They offer a number of programmes from Bike for Life and Get Ireland Walking to Men on the Move and Go for Life Games. The show Overshadowed will be screened by RTÉ in the coming months and the awards will be held in Berlin come September. The programme deals with eating disorders.
