Morning Focus – Monday 21/05/18

The week got off to a great start on Morning Focus as we welcomed the legendary Rachael English to studio.

Rachael is a well-known broadcaster and the author of four novels. She’s also a former member of Clare FM staff and joined Gavin to tell him all about her latest tale, The Night of the Party.

The show opened when Dr John Hillery came to studio. The Spanish Point psychiatrist is a candidate in the General Election for Fianna Fáil. He told Gavin why he’s voting ‘No’ in the forthcoming referendum.

Then, Dr Mary Aiken was Gavin’s guest. The cyberpsychologist told Gavin about her efforts to have the digital age of consent kept at 13, as a means of protecting kids online.

Latoon Bridge, the main artery to the village of Clarecastle, re-opens next week. Ahead of the long-awaited re-opening, Gavin heard from Mayor of the Ennis District and local councillor, Paul Murphy.

Clare FM’s Padraic Flaherty then presented the first of a series of special profiles of the county’s front line services. Today’s show heard about the extraordinary work of the fire service.

Then, Gavin spoke with Hannah Wrixon, one of the entrepreneurs behind a company called Get the Shifts. The firm is also run by Gillian Rijke and provides temporary hospitality staff for various events. On Thursday next (May 24), the company will represent Clare in the National Enterprise Awards.

The Monday Sports Panel was made up of Eoin Brennan of The Clare People and Peter O’Connell from The Clare Champion.
