Morning Focus – Monday 13/08/18

Opening the show this week was Brian Meaney, a former Green Party member and member of Clare County Council.

He discussed the possibility of log cabins being used as temporary housing for those saving for a house, especially around the Dublin area.

Then, it was time for an issue which always seems to impassion listeners, litter. Specifically, a recent study by IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) showed Doolin Pier to be a litter blackspot. The group monitored more than 40 beaches, rivers and harbours around the country, with Lahinch and Kilkee also being highlighted as ‘littered’ and ‘moderatley littered’ respectively. Conor Horgan from IBAL spoke to Gavin about the results in more detail.

Rounding out the shows first hour was post-office campaigner Francie Daly. Daly is rallying the people of Lissycasey to fight for their local post office. Following the offer of voluntary retirement packages by An Post an estimated 161 postmasters and postmistresses nationwide have opted to take the offer which is will lead to a number of post office closures. Specific to Clare closures are expected in Cooraclore, Cree, Doonbeg, Kilfenora, Craggagh-Fanore and of course, Lissycasey. However, An Post will not confirm until the end of this month. Lissycasey locals will be having a meeting in Lissycasey Community Hall tonight to fight for their own post office.
