Morning Focus – Friday 22/06/18

The show opened this Friday with Minister Pat Breen discussing comments made by Jean-Claude Junckers, head of the European Commission. Junkers assured the Taoiseach Ireland won’t be left behind by other EU countries just to get a deal on Brexit.

Then Stella O’Gorman of Clare Older People’s Council explained older peoples concerns over transport and toilet facilities. Currently, older people are more concerned with access to these areas over access to modern technology.

Finally on Morning Focus’ first hour we heard from Labour Senator Kevin Humphreys. He detailed a bill to regulate AirBnBs that he brought forward which recently passed the Seanad’s second stage.

Moving into the show’s second hour solicitor, Melanie Power talked about how a common post-natal procedure is leaving women in chronic pain. Vaginal mesh implants are used to manage incontinence, but defective products are leading to complications today. Be warned some of these products are still being offered today. Melanie is currently representing women fighting for redress from the HSE. The show also heard from a woman who suffered from these products, Leslie Ann.

Then we got all the details on Ennis Arts Festival from Teri Brandon who works on the festival’s committee.

Then we had our weekly arts round-up with Clare County Arts Officer Siobhan Mulcahy.

Lastly on the show’s second our we talked to the new editor of The Clare Champion, Peter O’Connell.

The show’s last hour was time for the Friday Panel. This weeks panel included Sharon Cahir of Cahir & Co Solicitors, Martin McMahon, Clare Chairperson of ICMSA and Michael Vaughan, Lahinch hotelier and former President of Irish Hotels Federation. They began by discussing the US/Mexican border migrant situation. Other topics included: Should alcohol be banned in airports before 10am? Are you a fan of buskers or are they an annoyance? Public art – is it worth the expense?
