Morning Focus – Friday 15/09/17

Friday’s Morning Focus was a lively mix of news and views and included an interview with the Ennis woman, Zainab Boladale, who is Ireland’s first Afro-Irish television presenter.

The show opened with a look at the outcome of Fine Gael’s political ‘think in’ just before the new Dáil term. Gavin was joined by Senator Martin Conway to analyse the political landscape as it stands currently.

Next in studio were Clare FM’s Derrick Lynch, Tom Lynskey and Fiona McGarry to look ahead to the All-Ireland Football Final on Sunday between Mayo and Dublin. Mayo natives Tom and Fiona told Gavin what a win would mean after 56 years, while Derrick assessed Dublin’s chances of getting three wins in a row.

Martin McMahon, Clare Chair of the ICMSA was the show’s next guest. He told Gavin farmers are facing tough times after poor summer weather.

Oral historian Dr Tomás MacConmara was also among Gavin’s guests. He discussed the Clare men involved in hunger strikes in 1917 in Mountjoy Prison. His new book Days of Hunger, The Clare Volunteers and the Mountjoy Hunger Strike of 1917 is launched this evening at the Temple Gate Hotel in Ennis. Listen back below:

Siobhán Mulcahy, Clare County Arts Officer then joined Gavin in studio for her weekly round-up of arts events around the Banner.

The weekend events round-up then heard from Bernard Hanrahan, Chairperson of the Clarecastle Show and from Dermot Hayes of Clare Leader Forum who are organising a Hip Hop Hooley at Cois na hAbhna (on Friday from 12-2pm).

The Friday Panel was made up of Orla Vaughan, Pat O’Neill and Gearóid Howard. Listen back below:

The show rounded off with a look ahead of to a national event to promote the ancient craft of spinning. Gavin was joined by Valerie McHugh who is passionate about the craft.
