Morning Focus – Friday 08/06/18

Friday’s Morning Focus opened with an interview with Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mícheál Mac Donncha. The Mayor discussed his plans to attend a peace vigil organized by Shannonwatch as part of campaign to stop US military activity in the area.

Then the show heard from Fine Gael TD, Joe Carey who talked about his position on the Roche plant closure in Clarecastle.

The final interview for Morning Focus’ first hour went to Tim Lombard, a Fine Gael senator for Cork. Lombard discussed his desire to remove the VAT from sunscreen to encourage people to use it in this sweltering weather.

Moving into our second hour, Gavin explored the current state of Irish boxing with author of the book “Punching Above Their Weight”, Seán McGoldrick. They answered questions such as why Katie Taylor is yet to fight in Ireland since going professional and is there any truth to the supposed links between boxing and crime?

Then we got all the details on the Tour de Burren Cycle from organizers Seán Kelly, Tour de Burren ambassador and Patrick O’Donoghue of Burren Cycling Club. The event takes place on Saturday, June 16th at Ballyvaughan.

Then it was time for the arts round up of all the upcoming events and exhibitions with Clare County Arts Officer, Siobhan Mulcahy.

Rounding off the hour Imelda Bourke of Loop Head Food Circle detailed the group’s event this weekend from 12PM to 3PM at Loop Head. The event will feature food from across the Peninsula and be attended by celebrity guest such as celebrity chef Rachel Allen.

Going into the show’s final hour it was time for the Friday Panel. This weeks panel included Dermot Hayes, Community Activist, Tony Killeen, former Minister for Defense and Margaret O’Brien, the Festivals and Events Co-ordinator for Ennis Chamber of Commerce. The panel discussed the possibility of means tested child benefit, whether the Gardaí should be armed and their own fond or not so fond Leaving Cert memories. The big question however was whether Ireland had learned anything since former Anglo Irish Bank CEO, David Drumm was found guilty of fraud.

The show ended with details from Mattie Shannon of Doolin Coast Guard about the coastguard’s event at station 42a in Ballaghline, Doolin to celebrate 80 years of search and rescue in North Clare. The event will take place this Saturday, June 9th.
