On Monday’s Morning Focus, It has been announced in recent days that Irish Water will begin to charge people who waste water.
The utility has been given the go-ahead to charge households up to 500 euro a year if they are using too much water. An estimated 80-thousand households are using above the set allowance. People who are found to be wasting water will have a year to fix any possible leaks or reduce their usage before being charged. Paul Moroney from Irish Water and formerly of Clare County Council joined us live on the show to explain why this is being implemented.

The economic upswing being enjoyed in the Mid-West has heralded the launch of a Limerick Chamber campaign and new website to support FDI and indigenous companies fill posts in the region, including County Clare.
The ‘Move Mid West’ campaign and website was unveiled at the Limerick Chamber organised ‘Let’s Talk Tech’ event in Dublin city centre, which was attended by representatives of large multi-national employers in the region, including First Data, looking to fill posts at their operations.
The campaign is in response to the 1,012 vacancies currently in the Mid-West, with over 630 of these in STEM professions. Some 631 of these are in IT, Engineering, Pharma/ Science (STEM). The first ever report into traveller health in Clare has been carried out and has shed some light on the issues facing the community.
Around 1,000 travellers live in Clare and due to a multitude of reasons – not least access to education and housing – their health has been shown to be a concern.
The lifespan of a traveller has been proven to be significantly less than that of a settled person – the study found not one traveller over the age of 85, while just 11 were over the age of 65.
Substance misuse and mental health problems also emerged as concerns. The report was carried out by the Midwest traveller Health Unit and Pavée Point and Clare FM’s James Mulhall went along to the launch.
