Morning Focus – 18/12/2018

Today was an important day for Shannon, with the announcement of significant funding for flood relief works in the town.

The works will cover Shannon Town, the Airport and Industrial Zone, and will be persued by Clare County Council and the OPW – the Minister with responsability for the OPW, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, spoke with Gavin about this, and also confirmed that the tendering process for the Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme has gotten back on track, after a fresh call for bids was made this summer. In the county town, works to protect around 120 properties will begin next Spring.

Ahead of a busy winter in our hospitals, we then heard from Colette Cowan, CEO of the UL Hospitals Group, and Bernard Gloster, Chief officer for Community Healthcare in the MidWest. Both of their groups have been working together to enact a plan ahead of the traditional spike in ED attendances in the New Year. You can hear the conversation in full below:

After our chat with Money Doctor John Lowe, our Morning Focus producer Fiona McGarry presented interviews that she has conducted with two people involved in the Bedford Row project, which supports the families of prisoners. It’s supporting around 70 people in Clare at present from its base at the Clon Road Business Park. Today we heard from Frank Gunter, Chairperson of its Steering Committee in Clare and a former Garda Superintendent, and from Breda, who is a volunteer with the group.

Gavin then spoke with broadcaster Mary Kennedy, about loneliness and burnout, and gardening too! She’s written about all of those subjects and more in her books, and her latest ‘Home Thoughts From The Heart’ is out now.

Finally this morning, Emmet Kavanagh of PhoneWatch gave us some security tips for our homes this Christmas.
