Morning Focus – Friday 28/02/20

Today on Morning Focus, we heard from a Kilrush lady, Cindy O’Brien, she made contact with the Morning Focus show as she was keen to share her story.

Tomorrow is in fact the 29th of February, it’s a very rare day in itself, therefore it makes it the perfect day to raise awareness for rare diseases. Cindy suffers from Parry Romberg Syndrome, a degenerative condition that affects her face. She’s one of only about 500 people in the world who have the syndrome, which was only diagnosed five years ago, even though she’s had it all her life.

Before that, to open the show, we were joined on the line by Independent Kilrush Cllr Ian Lynch as the Minister for Education will be written to by members of Clare County Council, asking that he make changes to the school curriculum. Cllrs Ian Lynch, Mary Howard and Cillian Murphy put a joint motion before this month’s meeting of Clare County Council requesting that the Minister amend the primary and second level curriculums and include swimming lessons at primary school and driving lessons at secondary level. They’ll also request the Minister for Finance allows for the provision of those in a school’s budget.

Then we spoke with Joe Robbins, Chairman of the Fundraising Committee, as a fundraising event has been organised for tomorrow night to raise money for Oatfield Church in Sixmilebridge. The church dates back to the Penal Times and is one of two remaining Barn churches in Ireland, alongside Cratloe Church. A group of volunteers have been fundraising for developments in recent years and have now discovered the original church bell has become unsafe and is in need of replacement.

We were due to hear about another event following from that but due to the weather warning the Spirituality Workshops in Ballygriffey has been cancelled. There’s no word yet of when it will take place. If you have any questions regarding this event, as there are more scheduled for around the county, you can email [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

The Annual Burren walk was due to take place this weekend but has also been cancelled due to the weather warning.

After the 10am News, we were joined in studio by our Friday Panelists who were; Brian Meaney, Former Green Party and Fianna Fail Cllr, Orla Vaughan, Kilfenora Businesswoman and John Quinlivan of Newmarket-on-Fergus, former Shannon Development executive. On today’s Panel we discussed if Ireland is prepared for the Coronavirus?, The Seanad Elections, we further talked about politics as government formation talks continue and we finished asking if Lent is still relevant in modern Ireland?
