This €19.5 million project has been in the works for quite a while now, with excavation works getting underway 11 months ago.

At that stage, the HSE said it would be a 15-month project, giving it an expected completion date of June of this year.

Now, the first of the units have begun arriving.

The modular units for hospital ward levels 1 to 3 have been prefabricated offsite and are being parked up in an area within a few miles of the hospital awaiting delivery.

Installation of these units is due to be complete by end of this month.

The beds are expected to be open to patients by the end of 2020, providing an additional 60 beds for the hospital, all single patient rooms with ensuites.
