Figures revealed at the committee’s recent meeting reveal that of the target of 195 units to be implemented here this year, they’re on track to delivering 164.

To the end of May, the local authority had 24 sales agreed and 26 sales closed and progress has also been made on leases and new builds as well.

Chair of the local authority’s housing committee, Independent Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn is pleased with the progress to date and says the acquisitions will be well spread around the county.

But another member of the committee has hit out over the comments saying local councillors should be ashamed of themselves for failing to do more to solve the housing crisis.

Dermot Hayes is calling on the council to carry out compulsary purchases of houses in light of the high numbers of people homeless, and the number of houses lying idle in this county.

He insists that the policy on providing social housing needs to be overhauled and he wants local representatives to do more to make that happen.
